Our services
Literacy & Reading
Helping every child become a confident reader.
Our speech-language pathologists help children build the sound, word, and language skills behind strong reading, spelling, and writing.

How we help
Reading support for
Signs your child would benefit from a reading and literacy evaluation
Every child learns at their own pace, but an evaluation may help if your child:
- Has trouble learning letter names and sounds
- Struggles with rhyming, clapping syllables, or breaking words into sounds
- Has difficulty sounding out new words or reads slowly and with effort
- Guesses at words, skips lines, or loses their place when reading
- Has trouble understanding or remembering what they read
- Struggles with spelling or avoids reading and writing
- Has a family history of reading difficulties or dyslexia
Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, we’re here to help.
What to expect at a reading and literacy evaluation
We complete evaluations over three visits, so your child has time to get comfortable and our team can get a true picture of their reading and literacy skills.
- 1Before the visits
We’ll get a referral from your child’s physician and send intake paperwork about your child’s history, school experience, and your concerns. If you have report cards, school testing, or an IEP, please bring copies.
- 2During the visits
A speech-language pathologist will talk with you and use a mix of standardized testing, informal testing, and age-appropriate activities to look at phonological awareness, decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, and overall language skills.
- 3After the visits
We’ll go over the results with you, answer your questions, and share recommendations, including whether therapy is needed and how often.
What we work on
Areas of reading and literacy therapy
Phonological awareness
Strong readers start by hearing and playing with the sounds in words. Our speech-language pathologists help children with:
- Rhyming and recognizing words that sound alike
- Clapping and counting syllables
- Hearing the first, middle, and last sounds in words
- Blending sounds together and breaking words apart
Phonics & decoding
Decoding is how children connect letters to sounds to read words. Our speech-language pathologists help children with:
- Learning letter names and the sounds they make
- Sounding out new words
- Recognizing common spelling patterns and word parts
- Reading sight words quickly and accurately
Spelling & writing
Spelling and writing grow from the same skills as reading. Our speech-language pathologists help children with:
- Spelling words by sound and pattern
- Writing complete sentences
- Organizing ideas to tell a story or explain a topic
- Building confidence in reading and writing at school
Fluency & comprehension
Reading is about more than saying the words; it’s about understanding them. Our speech-language pathologists help children with:
- Reading smoothly, at a comfortable pace, and with expression
- Understanding and remembering what they read
- Answering questions and retelling stories
- Building vocabulary to support understanding
